Judge Leonie Brinkema

Judge Leonie Brinkema sentenced 9/11 terrorist Zacarias Massaoui to life imprisonment.

He will be sent to a "super-max" prison 100 miles south of Denver, in the middle of the desert. He will be kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours each day, locked up in a soundproofed concrete room 60ft underground, measuring 7 foot-by-12 foot.

Massaoui tried to interrupt the judge, saying he had won.

"Well, Mr. Moussaoui, if you look around this courtroom today, every person in this room when this proceeding is over will leave this courtroom, and they are free to go anyplace they want," she said. "They can go outside, they can feel the sun, they smell fresh air.

You will spend the rest of your life in a super-maximum security facility. In terms of winners and losers, it's quite clear who won and who lost.

Mr. Moussaoui, you came here to be a martyr and to die in a great big bang of glory, but to paraphrase the poet T. S. Eliot, instead you will die with a whimper.

You will never again get a chance to speak, and that is an appropriate and fair ending."
