We even got to study it, part time, and we learnt about "the theatre of the absurd". Non-sensical situations and hilarious characters combined to create a late surrealist theatre that was dominated by Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, and my favourite, Eugene Ionesco.
We devoured plays like The Dumb Waiter, Waiting for Godot, The Bald Prima Donna and The Hothouse.
Despite their fantastical plays, all these playwrights declared that every day life and speech was much worse that anything depicted in their plays.
None would be surprised to see the above quote on the BBC web site as the first item of news.
